I am aware to keep the handle away from the cross piece tenon and dowels etc but was wondering if there was a standard height to which handles are normally fit.

Lever handles and horizontal push pull handles should be located between 900mm and 1100mm above the finished floor level with 1000mm being the preferred height. See diagram 5 1 in approved document k for more information. The backset is the corresponding vertical mark needed to center the knob.
